Drilling for oil now ??

MC CAIN YESTERDAY SAID we should be drilling for oil now of course he didn't say what we are going to do with it later ,

send it to japan or iraq for refining it ?? because the oil companies did not build any refineries here in the usa.

because it does cost money to do so what a bunch of crap this man is spreading aroundDrilling for oil now ??
doctor:

Don't be so harsh and so rush while you possibly lack of good information:

* oil companies trade crude oil for crude oil; crude oil for gasoline, crude oil for petroleum by products all the time

* one pipeline may carry various companies' products in tandem

* the position McCain takes is that by allowing drilling now, it would cool down all speculative traders who have geared for steady production while the demand is increased (China, India). Thus the crude oil price would drop.

* Neither Japan nor Iraq has any surplus capacity in refining. You meant Thailand, Philippine, S.A., Indonesia, right?

US strict regulation is the cause for not building refineries within the US for nearly 3 decades. All is well and good so far, because most of the crudes for US consumption is not from the US soil anyway, unless off shore drilling ban is lifted, and Anwar is available for business, before the Russian nail on the ocean floor another marker, saying it belongs to Russia.

Get some real %26amp; healthy info. will yah?

(pssst. give me 10 points, OK Salem?)Drilling for oil now ??
Its not crap and any common sense that you have if you have been following hte media will drill oil and used it and refine it here in the states thus creating more oil for the states and more employment oppurtunies for the people who live in the usa there for we will not have to pay the outrageous prices for forgein oil, yes it will take a couple of years before we see the benefits but that is with anything in life, so watch out a bunch of crap that you are spreading around if you are going to post a dumb comment make sure you do your research before you post stuipd crap like this, thank gosh you are not running for the white house!!!!

In addition to drilling now and drilling here, there are wells already drilled and capped; ready for production but environmentalist whackos will not let us get the oil.

    Location: Gull Island, Alaska.

We currently have refinery capacity to deal with increased oil supply and could have even more if the enviros and greens would let us build more refineries. How about on abandoned military bases??

The current oil leases are unused due to frivilous lawsuits brought by common (enviro) citizens on behalf of a polar bear, or a squid. or something like that.

There MUST be a balance between the needs of humans and the needs of animals.

Disband the EPA. Repeal the laws that allow frivilous lawsuits which prevent our energy independence.Drilling for oil now ??
Well, for off shore drilling it will take about five years before we start seeing any oil so maybe he just wants us to get a head start.

And its hard to build a refinery in the US because of all the environment laws, which coincidentally is the same reason we haven't been drilling for oil in the US.
You must be 12 years old or younger because you don't know what you are talking about.

Do you think the government should drill for oil in Alaska and why or not?

yeah and while they are at it untap the 1000+ year supply we have in montana and north dakota....... 80 cents a gallon anyone?Do you think the government should drill for oil in Alaska and why or not?
Yes, to reduce our dependance on foreign oil. To reduce the price of gas in the US.

Also, did you know there's oil under the Great Lakes? Canada is drilling it already.

EDIT: Yes, If you meant government allowing the drilling, not drilling itself!Do you think the government should drill for oil in Alaska and why or not?
    I don't want a government-run gasoline station.

I think Alaska should be able to decide whether or not the oil companies are allowed to drill there, and the other 49 states should butt out. The government should stop trying to ';secure our interests'; in the Middle East (fancy phrase for 'keeping the oil safe'), and let the free market come up with a fuel that works.
No. There are plenty of alternatives. Why not put the money into getting fuel efficient cars on the market? That will do more to cut the average American's cost of gas tan all theoil in AnWR.

Of course, that won't allow the oil companies to keep soaking us for more money, but you can't have everything!
    Yes why not!
If we don't drill for more oil, as the population increases in the United States, the demand will increase and the price of existing oil will continue to go higher. We need to drill for oil and build new refineries just to sustain the current prices, because of supply and demand.
Yes where ever, but those tree huggers will be after you!!! they seem to run things now!!!
It should be a decision for the voters in Alaska. It's their oil. My recommendation would be for the citizens of Alaska to form a corporation that allows them to profit from the sale of the oil while keeping the big oil companies out of the loop. If the benefits outweigh the harm, the voters can continue, but if they see some illness come to their land due to the drilling, they could agree to stop it without pressure or lawsuits from big oil.
No, but the government should allow oil companies to.
No! That's why its a preserve. To prevent that kind of thing.

We should put our efforts into developing renewable energy that will take us into the future.

The oil economy is busting our economy. It's probably the number one cause of the ailing economy. There are hundreds of billions of dollars in hidden costs, every year, associated with our use of oil and gas. Some estimates are as high as $800 billion or adding about $8 to the price of a gallon of gasoline. Military cost of protecting oil shipments up to $100 billion, subsidies to oil companies are huge, with one estimate of $80 billion annually. Health costs, environmental costs, damage to structures from acid rain and such.

Here's an article from Scientific American Jan. 2008, about a proposal to convert the U.S. electric grid to 65% solar by 2050 and close to 100% by 2100.

    http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=a-so鈥?/a>

They would use solar thermal power plants in the U.S. southwest. Also concentrating photovoltaic.

They both use parabolic mirrors or similar reflectors to concentrate sunlight.

We could have all electric cars when the grid is clean energy.

Green Wombat has several articles about ongoing projects in Callifornia.

    http://blogs.business2.com/greenwombat/

from one of the solar thermal companies' website

    ';Solar thermal power plants such as Ausra's generate electricity by driving steam turbines with sunshine. Ausra's solar concentrators boil water with focused sunlight, and produce electricity at prices directly competitive with gas- and coal-fired electric power.';

    ';Solar is one the most land-efficient sources of clean power we have, using a fraction of the area needed by hydro or wind projects of comparable output. All of America's needs for electric power 鈥?the entire US grid, night and day 鈥?can be generated with Ausra's current technology using a square parcel of land 92 miles on a side. For comparison, this is less than 1% of America's deserts, less land than currently in use in the U.S. for coal mines.';
No. It will ruin the environment.
We need to get our oil somewhere otherwise gas prices will continue to rise.聽 Not only for cars but homes, business who also use gas.聽 I am sure with all the Environment protection agencies Alaska's land will remain protected and we will not have to depend on foreign oil.聽 At this point the government needs to do something to help our economy and to provide security for our future...

    Drilling for oil...?

Where in the states do we drill for oil currently, how much do we pump for our own use, and how much do we import (and from where)? Does anyone have these answers or know where I can begin my research on it.Drilling for oil...?
I have seen oil wells from California to Texas. and we know that it is pumped in Alaska.

However many of the oil wells in California are down to the point where you can no longer pump the oil out easily, and they are pumping steam into the ground to make the oil liquid enough to pump.

Currently we are importing 70% of the oil we use.Drilling for oil...?
Here's some quick data about where our oil comes from to start with:

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/basics/quickoil.h鈥?/a>

Here's a link to the top 15 countries we import oil from:

    http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petro鈥?/a>

I couldn't find anything about which states produce how much oil, but just about every state in the US has some oil drilling going on. The vast majority of oil drilled in the US comes from the Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, and Texas.

One more interesting link you may like:

    http://www.pickensplan.com/theplan/

Besides the above states also Wyoming, Nebraska (I think), some other states in the same general area- Dakotas? We import about 2/3rds of our oil and EXPORT quite a bit also. Thats why drilling in Alaska won't do any good. The oil companies will get more money selling it to China and Japan than sending it down for us to use.
it would appear that texas, calif, alaska, and the carribean have the largest fields.

the link contains more data than i've seen anywhere.

it's interesting that it appears that the US is pumping the largest percentage of it's reserves of any country in the world.

which means that we'll run out the quickest.

if i read it correctly, maybe in 7-8 years.

that's from ';20 largest oil producers'; about 1/3 of the way down
They are drilling just about everywhere in the US. The US currently produces about 5 million barrels per day. We import about 21 million barrels per day on average.
There are also oil wells in Illinois. I heard on a talk show that we have more than enough oil in the U.S. to provide for all our needs.

Adding more crude oil to the international market will help everybody involved. Meaning, the prices will drop globally because there is more supply.Drilling for oil now ??
It isn't our refining capacity that's driving up the gas prices. Although we do need more refineries and need to update/repair our current sites.

It's the speculation that the amount of light sweet crude oil (the preferred oil because it's lighter, costs less to transport and is easier to refine) currently available for refining cannot satisfy the current world demand (partially our fault for sending so many jobs overseas).

Just by opening the offshore areas and/or ANWR to drilling would immediately drop prices. Oil prices are ';speculated'; on how much oil there is available for drilling, how much is demanded and how soon the available supply will run out. Opening these areas would increase the future amount available and drive prices down.

Remember what really started driving the prices up? The N.O. hurricane and the damage it caused, then tensions in the middle east that threatened the ';availability'; of the oil, then tensions in South America (Venezuela's president took over the oil fields and kicked out free trade) that also threatened oil availability from that region and tensions in Africa (not our fault) that threatened that supply line.

So, McCain isn't spreading crap around. He's just looking for a feasible answer to our current problems. We can't really fix the Middle East, Africa or South America, but we can rely on ourselves, start tapping into our own resources and move on from there.

Do you support drilling for oil off of U.S. shorelines?

I support drilling for oil, building new refineries and atomic power plants. developing clean coal technology, using geothermal, tidal, wind and solar power. In short developing all resources to make the US energy independent.Do you support drilling for oil off of U.S. shorelines?
Yes, for two main reasons. Hurricane Katrina traveled through 3,000 plus off shore oil and gas drilling rigs with no loss of life and no environmental damage, proof technology protects the environment. Secondly, China and other foreign countries are already drilling in international waters off of our coasts already. I trust US companies under US control more than foreign competitors.Do you support drilling for oil off of U.S. shorelines?
Not really. For one thing, the equipment and the personel needed would dilute any profits oil companies make. So, its a sacrifice oil companies may not want to pay for.t Unless some beacon of improvement can be made, ocean floor drillling wont be cheap and it may even be disasterous. I am sort of on the fence about it but may fall in the direction of common sense: it's probably not going to make much a difference ( save a few cents ) and we may sacrifice too much in order to save a few pennies.
    Yes...

The argument for not doing so is illogical. Opponents claim that they can already drill in enough places offshore. However, if this is true and they haven't maximized drilling, then what harm is there by letting them drill in new places?
The oil companies all ready can tap 4/5s of what the US has off shore and we just got no bid contracts for the big 4 oil companies in Iraq. So until we actually have a comprehensive energy policy, no.
    Yes, of course.

    Working People support Drilling Everywhere.

    Welfare Democrats don't.

They don't drive to work. Because they don't work.
Of course. China and India are drilling just off the Florida coast right now. Can you imagine! Those jackasses in Washington won't allow us to drill. Outrageous!!
nope, supply isn't the problem. the value of the US dollar is.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=USDEU鈥?/a>
I support drilling anywhere we have control over to reduce our dependence on foreign oil controlled by a bunch of moronic camel jockeys. Don't you?
logic says ';yes';. If we as a nation do not support it, another nation will come and do it for us and sell it to us at an inflated price. think about it. What is there not to support?
If you do or not is irrelevant. The Chinese have oil leases from Cuba to drill 50 miles from Florida.

We have been asleep at eh switch for way to long.
Me and 88% of the American population give a resounding YES.
Yes and any place else in the US that has oil.
Yes, we have to do something, anything.
I love the thrill of the drill.
    NO.
Yes. I'm not a liberal who hates America...
Maybe just China should do it...off Cuba.

    Of course I do.
    YES I DO
    Yes sir, always have.
I think if China can, we should be able to.
    yes
    yes

  • Did speculators raise the price of oil just to get off shore drilling

Don't think so, an increase in supply would lower the price, the opposite of what they're trying to achieve.Did speculators raise the price of oil just to get off shore drilling
No. They did not raise the price to get off shore drilling. Where there is a speculator speculating the price of oil will go higher there is a also a speculator speculating the price will go down. The speculation price goes up when more speculators feel the price will go up then feel it will go down.

Now, why do they think the price will go up? Because demand world wide is going up. While the US is use slightly less oil, countries like China and India are using exponentially more than they did in the past.

Why is the price of the barrel of oil going down? Because there is a real good chance the US with Bush's lead and pressure on democrats from the majority of the American people to allow more domestic oil drilling. Thus, threatening to add more oil to the world wide supply.

More supply, lower price.Did speculators raise the price of oil just to get off shore drilling
ahhh, heck no...off shore drilling actually will make speculators lose money because if off shore drilling is approved i say again if then it sends the expectation there will be more supply on the market and economics 101 says with more supply there is less demand. less demand for oil = lower prices which is bad for speculators because they will lose money unless they start shorting the market.

basically this question is irrelevant because speculators are actually good for the market and has nothing to do with manipulating the price of oil or the decision for off shore drilling. SOME small contigent believe speculators are the reason why oil is so high blah blah but they are just uneducated on this subject and dont know how the commodity futures markets work. Oil WAS (oil is currently down over the past weeks) at record high for two reasons: DECREASED AMERICAN DOLLAR CURRENY (OIL IS PRICED IN DOLLARS) %26amp; THE GROWING TERROR PREMIUM ON OIL WHICH MEANS EVERYTIME SOME IDIOT IN NIGERIA SABOTAGES THE OIL PIPELINE OIL GOES UP A FEW BUCKS

BILLY MAYS: OPEC doesnt set the price on oil- oil is traded globally and the real time market sets the prices which change every second unless your in the spot market

Col Kurts- If anyone could have predicted that-there would be many over night billionaires including myself as an investor/speculator in oil. No one knows when oil is going to go up or down exactly, thats the same thing as saying you know when google stock will soar or crash
Listen........oil is a world commodity. The United States does not control oil prices!!!! You are saying that speculators from all over the world are raising oil prices so that America can drill more oil???? The problem is that drilling is happening everywhere else EXCEPT the United States. We are screwing ourselves.
Yes, Virginia, it is a big conspiracy. Of course they all have investments in big oil. Duh.

Jeez, if people only had a decent education in this country.
That would be good to know. Then we'd know it went for good cause!

Congress keeps blocking oil drilling. We need to do it! Besides China will if we don't! While we work on other things too!
well considering the price of oil is dropping and they have'nt got it yet the answer is NO.
No they did it for the PROFITS..... THEN they sold SHORT for more profits off the Last ones in.........
No. speculators are only in it for the immediate money.
No. They speculate that we will not drill there by driving up the prices.
No, they did this to help their own pockets.
No. OPEC raised the price of oil to get more money.
    funny.
Maybe. They just want more and more profits.
    No.
    MMMmmmmm.... could be!
no that would be counter productive to what they are trying to do

Because so many Americans are overweight, will we be drilling for oil in cemeteries a few centuries from now?

Not to be disrespectful, It's just something that plopped in my mind. Don't take it personalBecause so many Americans are overweight, will we be drilling for oil in cemeteries a few centuries from now?
    Haha. Interesting thought.

Hopefully we won't have a need for oil a few centuries for now. I think we should resort to alternative fuels before we start using our ancestors to start running our flying cars.Because so many Americans are overweight, will we be drilling for oil in cemeteries a few centuries from now?
lol thats funny. May as well make use all that space somehow!
give me break already how could we possibly know whats gonna happen two centuries from now do you always have to compare everything to the americans do you really feel we are that superior to you .

Help me! I search a post engineer for petrol: drilling and oil deposit operation? no irak, nigeria?

My ex-husband has a Master's in Petroleum Engineering. I myself worked in the oild and gas industry for ten years. I believe I can answer most of your question; unfortunately, I do not understand what you are trying to say.

Why don't we increase domestic drilling for the oil and gas we need.?

Because the tree hugging democrats won't let us.

Then they sit back and complain about the heavy

price of imported oil.Why don't we increase domestic drilling for the oil and gas we need.?
I give up, why????Why don't we increase domestic drilling for the oil and gas we need.?
No, we should reduce our need for the finite Fossil fuels, and opt for renewables which can be infinite.
cause that would cost money and you would make money and that would increase global warming and it would even itself out keeping gas the same price
We are! In the news you will never hear them say the word Wyoming. Unless some serial killer passed through there. If you drive I-80 through you might just see what I'm talking about from the road. I know because I worked on alot of the rigs throughout the state. Think Halliburton....

    Obama finances drilling for oil?

Is this what Obama plans on using the tax payer's money for? Or the money from the stimulus?

I thought the left was against drilling. Because it (increases global warming).

    http://sweetness-light.com/archive/obama鈥?/a>

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424鈥?/a>Obama finances drilling for oil?
Yeah there he is giving Brazil $2Billion to drill for oil. But lord knows we can't drill here.

Why drilling for oil in the us ??

SOME MISGUIDED REPUBLICANS WOULD LIKE to ruin our last little wild life and nature for the sake of their profits. get the oil from the arabs they live in the desserts and sand dunes no harm done thereWhy drilling for oil in the us ??
You may want to look at the areas where there is drilling and where the Pipe Line crosses wild life areas, those ares have been made into sanctuaries that are more accommodating than they were before. Why drilling for oil in the us ??
I thought you wanted to get off of foreign oil?
Actually, you have zero accuracy in your statements.

    1. ANWAR would not hurt the environment at all. We would drill in the winter and be gone by the spring.

    2. ANWAR is only a fraction of the entire thing. We would drill in less than .5% of the land.

    3. We can drill or our enemies can drill. China is drilling off the coast of Cuba. Do we want money in the hands of us or our enemies?

    4. By not dealing with our energy, we are making billions for Russia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Venezuela. These are our enemies.
I think the real issue is finding alternate sources of power. It won't be easy and will take many years and much money, but eventually it will have to be done. Oil isn't a renewable resource.
The area in Alaska where they want to drill is the size of a postage stamp in relation to the rest of the region.
I don't think this is an issue for just Republicans. I am an independent voter who want to see oil drilled for here in the U.S. and I am fairly certain some Democrats also want that especially when we see oil prices advancing this summer.

The main place where we know there is oil is in Alaska and carefully done it will not destroy wild life. You have to keep in mind that there is already the Alaska pipeline in place. Contrary to some beliefs the pipeline actually resulted in the increase of caribou because in the winter the pipeline is heated and its warmth helped the animals. Oil sea rigs are being built just outside our 12 mile international limit by other countries so putting oil rigs near there would be prudent and wise to secure oil for our needs instead of letting other nations take what is near us. we have to get away from depending on other nations and going halfway around the war to get what we can drill for here in our own yard.
I guess we could drill for oil to see if there's any really there at all. I think it's just a bluff to OPEC. Kinda trying to fool em into thinking we got the stuff too so they'll flood the market.
Maybe a whole 500 people have ever seen Anwar, nothing there but ice, snow and Carabou.

We have lots of Wilderness areas, maybe you need to travel more.
make up your minds, do we want to depend on foriegn oil or find our own?

The guy below me is right, while drilling rigs are large, comapritively they dont take up that much space, with new technologies coming out evry year and newer more enviromentally friendly rigs being built, we could extract your own oil and not completely destroy the Alaskan wilderness.
No need to drill any where else apart from the muslim world all we need some good reason for invashion but even that i dont think we need a good reason even stupid reason would in this day in age
I lived in Oklahoma for five years. They have drilled for oil their for years and years. There is less environmental impact from a oil well than there is from a city block the same land size area. Oil companies do a lot to prevent runoff from the site. Industrial, commercial and even residential parts of town do next to nothing to prevent chemicals from running off into the creeks through the storm drains. No one talks about the water, soil and air pollution that every house, store and factory causes. Not all environmental impact is caused by the ';evil'; oil companies.

If oil drilling is so hard on the environment, they why be ok with it going on in ';the middle east';. What happens in one part of the world effects the whole world eventually. If you are so worried about the environmental impact of oil, why not spend your time and effort coming up with truly viable alternatives to it? If you are content to continue driving your car, buying things made of plastic or synthetic fibers (which are made from oil) and using electricity generated by burning oil, then stop complaining!

Don't you want to stop having our country relying on countries that harbor terrorists for it's oil? As long as we need oil from these countries, we're in a weakend position when it comes to diplomacy. If we need their oil, we can't really put economic pressure on them (the only pressure we can put on them that they will take seriously besides bombing them back to the stone age) to get them to attack the terrorists instead of hiding them.

Also, if we drilled our own oil in the U.S. (there are millions of acres here that have oil deposits that we are not drilling), it would reduce costs since we wouldn't have to ship it half way across the world. That costs money too. Ever notice on the news when they talk about the states with the lowes average gas costs? They also happen to be the ones where we do drill and refine oil. Duh! Lowering transportation costs helps reduce gas prices.
You liberals crack me up with your pie in the sky nonsense.';No drilling for our own oil! No new refineries Get out of the Middle East! No blood for oil! No blood for oil! No nuclear power! No coal!'; WHaa whaa until you get your way. Then when the easily predictable results of YOUR policies happen-

    ';What! Gas is four bucks a gallon! BUSH';S FAULT!';
The oil in Alaska is a very heavy, dirty stuff and most of it needs more energy to get to, then it's worth it.

We would be better of to reduce our oil usage quickly, that the only smart way and would cost much less then the current wars
we don't have to depend on any oil at all....all the green technology is there and ready to be used but it is being suppressed by the greed of the American corporations and government
if your so concerned about our planet and why are you not talking about alternate fuel sources instead of getting getting oil from the arabs?
Oh that's brilliant, Einstein! We have plenty of oil in our hemisphere but we should be dependent on finicky Arabs who can cut off our supply at the drop of a hat. If we have oil here, then we should be drilling for it to not only bring down the price at the pump but to be less dependent on foreigners. All this talk about destroying the environment and wild life is sheer nonsense. Today's drilling operations are clean and safe.

Now pull your head out of the Arab sand.
We have plenty of wild life, none of which is ';ruined'; by drilling.

Have you ever been to an oilfield? The rigs would be miles apart. The caribou wouldn't even notice. It's not like they want to refine the stuff there. Do deepwater rigs ';ruin'; the ocean for the whales and dolphins? Has a whale ever collided with a rig? No.

ANWR won't get us off foreign oil but it can help a bit and the ';wildlife'; argument just isn't accurate.

  • Is drilling for oil boring?

boring is a simple word my friend its a hard task and gruelling schedule .it sometimes makes you feel like life is useless as if the purpose of the life was overIs drilling for oil boring?
What a penertrating question, Does it auger well for an answer? Is drilling for oil boring?
    find a book called ';Don't Tell Mum I work on the oil rigs, She thinks I am a piano player in a whorehouse';

A long title but a darn good read... and if you are thinking of working in this field I am sure it will be an even better read...

Sorry I can't remember the autor's name but it is definitely worth tracking down and reading the book.
Probably but not as boring as this question!
    In a manner of speaking.
No, you can become VERY rich, Rockerfella found oil or something and would have had over $100,000,000,000 in todays money
no, a hard job. you talk about hot days and being away from people you you know
My husband used to work on an oil rig...he said that you can't get bored, because it is dangerous work...one wrong thing and you get hurt, or he saw a man killed one time.
no it can be rather deep
VERY BORING. WHEN I GET BORED I MAKE SPAGHETTI JUST TO PASTA TIME AWAY NOW THATS USING YOUR NOODLE!
    chiching
    very
Well, Oil need to give this some deep thought before I can dredge up something valuable for an answer.

I know that drilling can be boring at times; however, at other times, it can be barrels of fun. (I do hope this question isn't rigged; that would be a real 'bore.')
i would rather drill my women instead.
Does this question need to be answered. why do you need to know? I'd quess it is. But so also is anything repeditive. I'm sure it pays well, and you have long breaks. who cares. why did i answer. I'm as bad as you now.
No boring for oil is drilling...er, thrilling
    HAHAHAH drilling , boring....AHAHAHAHA i get it

    good one
    Very droll!
It is not boring for the owner of the oil well.

Why do you think drilling for more oil in the U.S. will lower gas prices? It doesn't work in Norway...?

    READ FIRST:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080722/bs_鈥?/a>

Norway is the 5th largest exporter of oil, yet there gas prices are even higher than ours. What is going on here? Clearly, the gas prices are NOT related to how much you drill in your own country...Why do you think drilling for more oil in the U.S. will lower gas prices? It doesn't work in Norway...?
Gas prices are market driven. It used to be that gas prices were driven by supply/demand, but it now seems that the market drives prices by fear of possible supply/demand issues.

For instance, when the next hurricane strikes the gulf coast region nearest Houston and Louisiana, you'll see gas prices increase because of the perceived scarcity of oil/gas as a result of refinery plant shutdowns or loss of the refineries due to the storms. The storm doesn't even have to actually hit the region...if people think it will, it immediately drives prices skyward. Why do you think drilling for more oil in the U.S. will lower gas prices? It doesn't work in Norway...?
First, read this article which explains health and education services in Norway and TAXES. http://energypreparedness.net/news/norway/20060526

Maybe you can live without a car as many in Norway do鈥ut as a hospice nurse in western PA, I have at times put 1500 miles on my car in 7 days.

Norway鈥檚 government has claims of having a fund, which they put profits from oil into and will not touch. Hope the citizens of Norway have better politicians than we do, remember social security was not to be touched. Washington crooks still have their hand in that pot of money.

As for economics, if we even begin to drill new wells and start to become independent of oil by also developing alternative energy鈥?it will worry the speculators and OPEC鈥?competition in a free market will bring the prices down.
Yep, gas is really expensive in Norway, but seeing as we're a net exporter the high gas prices also make us more wealthy.

Having one of the best welfare systems in the world costs a lot of money. As a result, there are no really poor people, the only exception being a small number of addicts who blow all their welfare cash on drugs. This welfare system is supported through taxes on various things, obviously gas prices plays a big part. There is also a 25% VAT on most consumer items.

The most expensive gas I've seen here, was last week: 13.78 NOK/liter, which is 10.18 USD/gallon. Even so, people with a full time job are generally not having trouble supporting a car, the people who complain the loudest are typically students or people with part-time jobs. It's not as common for students to have their own cars in Norway as it is in the US, but those who do own cars try to cut down a little on usage right now.

The price increase isn't as dramatic in Norway though: The prices were already high before the recent crisis. In the same time that it took for the US gas prices to almost double, Norwegian prices have only risen from around 11 NOK/liter to around 13.50-13.80.
    This is why: Kyoto Protocol

    HIGH COSTS

    ';It's technically possible to electrify the continental shelf,'; said Bente Nyland, head of the NPD. ';The drawback is that the costs are high...it's labour intensive and it will take time.';

Norway is seeking ways to cut greenhouse gas emissions to meet climate goals under the UN's Kyoto Protocol. Emissions are over target.

Friday's report, focused on overhauling existing platforms, estimated that costs for cutting a tonne of carbon dioxide emissions would range from 1,600 crowns in the southern part of the North Sea to 4,750 crowns in the middle North Sea.
Well, according to the article the government of Norway is run by a bunch of Left-Wing morons. They are using punitive tax rates to punish those ';evil'; people that dare to drive cars in Norway and are screwing up the enviro-wacko, socialist governments' vision of Utopia that is based on lies and half-truths. In a new style Theocracy based on the religion (Faith, not Science) of radical environmentalism Supply and Demand are stymied and the population is made to suffer.
Well let's see. Um oh yeah The US and Norway are two different places. I'm betting that Norway's gas is so much more because the tax on it pays for a lot of things. Not so in the US, we are taxed a little on every single thing and sometimes double and triple taxed. Therefore our gas prices can't really be compared to their gas prices.
See, this is great evidence that oil prices are not set by supply and demand. They are set by oil speculations. Hence, this is why oil prices spiked last week and then dropped when the Hurricane left the oil rigs alone. So, why does anyone think drilling more oil will decrease gas prices?

    I don't know. Good find.
It's the refineries that produce petrol and diesel. They need more refineries or a bigger capacity. Refineries are expensive. Norway is tax mad.
You can explain this until you are blue in the face to the Bush loving right wingers, but they just can't comprehend this fact.

Too busy polishing their lapel pin while mumbling to Jesus I guess.
It worked big time in Brazil. Is it possible that taxes or fees are keeping the price high in Norway?
    O_o

The cost of living in North Europe is heaps higher .
they are just trying to pull the wool over our ears, or is it eyes.
Our country sees this drilling as the answer to our immediate problem of the oil crisis. This is not the case because this will not produce the amount of the barrels of oil that is required to meet the needs of our country. There are many dangers in drilling for oil in this region. One such reason it the oil contaminates the water it will cause a dead sea effect. This would end the life of the corral reef which in turn harm if not eliminate the surrounding sea life. This happening in different geographic areas of the world. This argument has not been used in the defense of the oceans for ecological reasons. Our government is reacting by drilling for offshore oil which exceeds great if not infinite harm to our environment. The solution to the oil crisis is to far sighted. It is my op-ion the next President of country should have the Congress enact immediate financial measures for individual who may methods for the solution of our energy crisis but do not have funds to further their studies. The current solutions are to far to reaching to meet the needs of our country. Hope this helps.

I intend to buy house while environmental test, out of five drilling hole's it has been found oil in one hole.?

we did not find oil in other hole, upon inquiry, the seller had oil tank in that area which he had removed by authorized agency,Is it safe to buy this house ?should we buy this house ?I intend to buy house while environmental test, out of five drilling hole's it has been found oil in one hole.?
Hmmm...Interesting situation. You would have to check with the local building inspector and zoning laws. If the soil is considered contaminated, depending on the size, you will have to consider the cost to you if the laws change and you need to remedy the situation before you sell the house. For example, where I am from in Massachusetts, before my friend, an auto mechanic, could sell his business property, he had to remove 30 tons of earth (approximately 3 triaxle trucks) at an expense of $75K.

    Drilling for oil?

Why is it that the environmentalists do not want America drilling for oil off our coasts, but find nothing wrong with other countries drilling off our coasts??

And until we do get an alternative fuel how do they want us to continue to produce enough electric to supply America without interuptions?Drilling for oil?
    Here is Oil

Ted Kennedy Dumps Fuel into Nantucket Sound

Ted Kennedy has called Nantucket Sound near his Massachusetts estate “a national treasure” — but that didn’t stop the senator from having oil dumped from his yacht into its waters.

A local photographer spotted an oil slick coming from Kennedy’s yacht Mya as Kennedy and his guests left the vessel in a launch following a race that ended in Hyannis, the Cape Cod Today newspaper reported.

The lensman was so shocked that he rowed his dinghy out to question the crew member left aboard the yacht.

He asked the crewman, “What the hell are you doing?”

The crewman said that diesel fuel had gotten into the bilge and he was told to dump it.

When the photographer pointed out that the yacht was moored in coastal waters near shellfish beds and people swimming, the crewman replied, “Whatever.”

Cape Cod Today published a photo showing the oil slick emanating from Mya.

As Newsmax reported earlier, Kennedy has opposed a proposal to construct a wind farm in Nantucket Sound to produce cheap, clean energy. Asked why, he said: “That’s where I sail.”Drilling for oil?
actually the environmentalists dont want anybody drilling for oil anywhere. they realize however that they cant stop other countries from drilling, only the US. the problem with environmentalists is that they dont look onto the future, they only look at today.
    Bill the truth is ....the oil companies are the ';Environmentalist.';

The truth is: before drilling for oil begun.....NY and Penn, and Chicago was plagued by earth quakes....drilling for oil to relieve the pressure.....stopped the earth quakes.

No so in Califronia....they would not allow drilling till the late 70's and still resist drilling......but the bad earth quakes have stopped.....they used to be annually, there.

Oil and high pressure gas, is something we have to get rid of if we want to live in peace and safety.

This is a billion year process......and with recent autos, the earth has got to a point in producing countries where life is good and not like before....

There are wells in Texas and Mexico (350 mi south of the border) that are over 25,000 years old.....yes with stone casing instead of pipe.....and still producing. (see: R. Sterling, Sterling PetroChemical, Old Omec Site MEX.)

The first off shore oil will, can be seen in the picture section of the book ';Eisenhower Declassified'; an autobiography of a lot of events....that were declassified later.

The name of the first Off-shore well then (they registered it like a ship and then a oil well) was ';Mary Margret- #1'; (and ';MM #2) and was drilled in the inter-coastal Federal waters in Louisiana and was given to the Navy (Army) to fuel ships for the coming WWII in 1937 in which the land based oil companies who controlled state politicians, were trying to sell their oil to the government for 3 times the going price.

That one oil well broke the back of that oil ';crisis'; at the time.

The next 5 off shore wells were drilled on the inter-coastal canal in Corpus Christi,Tex at marker 46a and become a filling station for the Navy Fleet, at C.C. Naval air station.

There were others in years later...in the Florida area for the ships there....This ';Free oil program'; was the idea of some shrimp boat operators who worked in the oil fields during the week. And just got tee'ed off at the New York oil companies trying to hold up the American government.

In the early 50's one of the brothers (5) who were drilling the off shore wells.....because the cold war, drilled a mountain in Wyo. (longhorn) to fuel the new ';NORAD'; center in the mountains in Colorado...giving them a personal supply of fuels to run their complex for years in case of atomic attack.

    That brought in the concept of ';slant-drilling.';

Today that well fuel Denver cars....also, where as before they had to truck the gas from S.Texas, from the same oil companies that caused the problem, before.

The guys that pulled this off did it for their American neighbors, to keep them from getting ripped off, and did not ask a thing for it. All the wells are still producing, but there is lots more to the story..of coarse.

Its no joke......that is the real story, in the investigative congressional record.....you will read about the guys who tried to scam America....but just got off with small fines.

Did you know they gave the Alaska Pipe line to England and British Petro......and England holds all the remaining leases in California, Az, New Mexico (including area 51) and parts of Utah, and Colorado.....? When they received the pipe line payed for by Americans.....The Oil was $9 dollars a barrel in 1991...then Bush....$50 dollars.....then another Bush $100+

This stuff comes out of the ground for free. !!! But when they hold all the production......$1000 a barrel of cheap.

If you think its the Arabs.......You are just silly.

ARAMCO's world offices are on the West Loop in Houston....not Saudi-Arabia, I said there is more to the story......
Who is drilling for oil off our coasts? Cuba? They are drilling for oil off THEIR coast! No matter how much Cuba has pissed off the US government over the years, it still is its own country. We had a chance to make it a state, but didn't.

Hardly anywhere burns oil to make electricity anymore in the US and our grid is maxed out already as it is. No more power can go over the lines so we'd better stop needing more or fork out tens of billions for new power lines.

BTW, I say drill off our coasts if they want.
The Democrats want to completely cripple this country.
They are against the pollution. There is a possibility of a ';blowout'; such as happened off the coast of California in the '60s.

The new technology has almost eliminated that problem. California used to be a good producer but the oil fields there are primarily for storage.

Also, when the fields are pumped, salt water is injected into the wells to eliminate the possibility of subsidence.

We are still pumping oil here but we have to ship it off-shore to get it refined since we've lost some refineries and the environmental restrictions make it economically restrictive to build new ones.

Anwar has a lot of oil in situ, but the environmentalists are against it, even though it would be a very small part that is affected.

Now with the ';Climate Change'; scam, the ';Neo-Leftists'; have found a drum they can beat and have enlisted the UN and the third world in their anti-US rhetoric.
ok, i think you should see both the movies, who killed the electric car, and the inconvenient truth, that should be a pretty clear answer to your 3rd question
You are making the big mistake of thinking the eco-bigots are rational. I'm sorry, I've found too many aren't. Their emotions interfere with their reasoning and they stop short of realizing those obvious flaws in their rationale.
they may be forced to change their attitude(or maybe reason will prevail %26amp; we ignore them). China %26amp; India have recently signed a deal with cuba to extract the oil from under the Florida straits where the rad. libs. have prevented U.S. oil companys from drilling for years. also the Europeans are prospecting in the arctic.

its questionable if we can use it anyway because the same radical extremists have blocked the construction of any new refinerys in the U.S. for 20 years. maybe they will be happy when the terrorists finally succeed in blowing up a few of our old ones %26amp; we will have to do without for the 6 to10 years it will take to build new ones.
    Higher gas, smaller car.
It is the Americanism. They want to rule the world with their power. They using U.N. and other helpline organizations as pawns to reach their goal. They never hesitate to kill the infants in the name of peace and by the support of U.N.

Who will punish them. Where is the United Nations principles.

Why not they imposing restrictions on Israel.

If United Nations is really good, then it can assure the children's future. Why it is mum and dead. Most of organizations are like this only. Their principles are like show case dolls, they never speak.

Drilling for oil? Obama or McCain?

I was all for McCain when he was saying that we needed to drill. Now I hear Obama saying that oil companies already have millions of acres in which they are not drilling....what's the oil's company's and republican's answer to this accusation? Is it that the lands that they have already been given don't have oil? What's the next point in this argument?

Drilling for oil? Obama or McCain?
All this talk of drilling or not drilling is a bunch of meaningless hype.

Ask yourself a simple question: Who will operate the drills?

The oil companies? Wrong. Why would oil companies, who are making record profits, want to increase supply and subsequently devalue their product on the market?

We could tell oil companies they can drill in every square inch of US territory, but they won't. It would be bad for their business. The oil companies are the ones holding prices where they are, not politicians.Drilling for oil? Obama or McCain?
My bet is either Obama is lying or distorting facts/statistics to suit his ';argument';. His entire campaign so far has consisted of making baseless accusations towards his opponents and crying discrimination and foul play anytime his ';arguments'; are refuted. If he is saying that the oil companies already have millions of acres I would respond simply with prove it. Where are these acres of property? Do they even provide access to any oil? An oil company with access to property and not drilling for available oil on that property simply does not make sense and sounds more likely to be an empty accusation to confuse the voters and draw attention away from the real issues.
The Democrats have painted themselves into a corner on this one.

They receive some big bucks from the environmentalists, and a lot of Democrats are up for re election this year.

Drilling is the answer, and as far as all those acres, they have been checked out, not much in those areas, Obama says release the strategic reserves?, The military has to have that to defend this nation.

    DRILL NOW!
It doesn't matter what either says. Drilling won't reduce the cost of American gas because America does not own the oil; the oil companies do and it will be sold on the open market to the highest bidder.

Venezuela can sell its gas in Venezuela at 12 cents a gallon because Venezuela's oil is nationalized. The people of Venazuela own it.
Who said oil is the base of your economy?, my merchandise is the base of your economy...

Should states that refuse to drill for oil in their own states should have higher gas tax?

than a state that does. For example your state doesn't have any oil in it your state is exempt. but if your state does have oil in it and it refuse to drill i think those states should pay a lot more in taxes than the states that do.Should states that refuse to drill for oil in their own states should have higher gas tax?
most states can,t drill for oil, so how can they be taxed for something they can,t do. we need to tax congress if they don,t allow drilling or nuclear.Should states that refuse to drill for oil in their own states should have higher gas tax?
To begin with, there aren't any states that drill for oil-companies drill for oil to make profit. The potential for such feasible oil discovery/extraction exists in precious few of our 50 United States. You seem to assume a level playing field leaves each state with the choice of yes or no. Often, it's something beyond the omnipotent power of the state that makes exploration/extraction decisions, and they seldom follow the lines on a state map.

You'll need to re-think your taxation, and base it on something other than the geography of the earth being such a determining factor.

INSTEAD, why not institute an arbitrary tax? Maybe a pro-rata on states with more than two vowels in their names?

Maybe charge more for states that eat the most bananas, per-capita? Extra charge those states that haven't produced a Supreme Court Judge!

    The sky's the limit!
    No.

It is is federal regulations that prevent new drilling, not the individual states.

Ultimately it is the federal government that decides if any new drilling can happen.
An import tax for Gasoline crossing state lines?

Harry Reid wants just the opposite, more taxes on the producers and the users.
No. Really lame suggestion. Instead lets have the states without oil pay a worthless tax.
States set their gas tax based on how much money they need to maintain their infrastructure.
Sure if you are in a socialist country they would. but since we live a free-market economy, they can refuse to drill and buy it anywhere else they want.

  • Is offshore drilling gonna have a big impact on crude oil prices?

http://brosgarcia.comIs offshore drilling gonna have a big impact on crude oil prices?
It will have some effect, but the reality is it will neither be large or immediate. However, there are many more important reasons to support offshore drilling:

-- It keeps the money at home and supports the US economy and the dollar

-- It provides jobs for Americans and reduces the unemployment and welfare rolls

-- It provides a source of energy that helps to ensure the security of this nation for the next 20-30 years...the time it will take to wean our country off of fossil fuels

-- It potentially keeps us out of foreign wars related to our thirst for oil

-- It provides many billions of tax dollars to the US government. The lease auctions alone put several billion dollars a year in revenue to government coffers -- that is an immediate benefit. The royalty fees and taxes on the successful oil companies will provide many billions more. People dont know it, but the US government (in the form of gasoline taxes, O%26amp;G royalties, lease auctions, corporate income taxes, and personal income taxes of oil company employees) makes many times more money on high oil prices than do the ExxonMobil's of the world.

Reducing the price of gasoline is one reason to support offshore drilling. However, ensuring the economic and military security of this nation is far more important. Is offshore drilling gonna have a big impact on crude oil prices?
Not any time soon. It'll take 5-10 years before we see an impact. Some analysts are estimating we won't see a change until 2030.

The reason why it will take so long is because they still need to find the oil and build the rig. In order to compensate for the cost of searching, building and employment they will raise the price of gas.

We won't see a change any time soon. This is just a solution that is being passed to make the public happy. In my opinion, they should take the millions of dollars they are going to spend on offshore drilling and invest it in studies for alternative fuel. Even if we pursue offshore drilling, how long until we run out of that and are in the same situation?
NO, it takes too long to develop a new oil field, especially one in the ocean. Something like 10 to 12 years for production. And while there is oil there, it's not huge fields that will actually make a difference when they do start producing. Opening the off shore drilling is just a political tactic so the politicians can say they've done something. It's kind of like planting a tree to help with wood prices. It's 40 years before the tree is big enough to harvest.
There isn't going to be any just because the stupid congress has a stop on it. If they do not get together and lift the ban on drilling there will never be any. Just because the president lifted th executive ban --Congress must do so also
I believe offshore drilling won't make a difference. It's already estimated that by 2010 a gallon of gas will be around $7.

Do you think we will drill the oil that was found in ND?

supposely it's enough to last us 100 years or so.Do you think we will drill the oil that was found in ND?
I'm not sure I understand your question. There are billions of barrels of oil in the Bakken Shale - it is just a question of how much it will cost to produce it and how much people are willing to pay for it. If oil producers can make money producing oil from the Bakken, they will do it - if they can't make money they will plug the wells and look elsewhere. Contrary to what some misinformed people would have you believe, there is NO conspiracy to withhold oil supplies in the United States - Jeez I get tired of hearing that bullcrap. The Bakken is a low permeability reservoir that requires special competition techniques and even then the production rates are relatively low compared to a lot of overseas oil. It sounds like you've been reading too much of the hype about the red-hot Bakken play in western ND.Do you think we will drill the oil that was found in ND?
The logic behind us having to pay high fuel costs is because it lines the pockets of oil industrial executives.

So why would they invest money in a project where we could have cheaper gas?

Personally, I would like to see a time when garbage and trash could be used as fuel.

So instead of taking your garbage curbside, you could run it through a device that would make fuel.
No, here in Michigan there are 1,000's of oil wells, all capped. The small guy was bought out by the big guy, who was bought out a bigger, etc. I know that they drilled for a decade in my township(48421), then shut them ALL down. The best way to keep prices up, is to not have enough.
We should drill and use the oil we have availible so that we

    control the fuel prices.
No, the US like Importing oil to much to dig in our own country.

You don't cure an alcoholic by telling him where more bars are, and drilling for more oil won't get us off our

oil addiction. Why won't Bush put his 'energy' behind REALLY making the transition from oil to other energy sources. I know we can do it. All I get from him is hot air - too bad we can't harness that! You don't cure an alcoholic by telling him where more bars are, and drilling for more oil won't get us off our
In December, President Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007, which responded to his ';Twenty in Ten'; challenge in last year's State of the Union Address to improve vehicle fuel economy and increase alternative fuels.

The Renewable Fuels Mandate will increase the use of renewable fuels by 500 percent 鈥?requiring fuel producers to supply at least 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel in the year 2022.

The Vehicle Fuel Economy Mandate specifies a national mandatory fuel economy standard of 35 miles per gallon by 2020, which will save billions of gallons of fuel and increase efficiency by 40 percent.

Additionally, the Act advances the following efficiencies:

The Lighting Efficiency Mandate will phase out the use of incandescent light bulbs by 2014, and improve lighting efficiency by more than 70 percent by 2020.

The Appliance Efficiency Mandate sets over 45 new standards for appliances.

The Federal Government Operations Mandate will reduce the energy consumption of Federal Government facilities 30 percent by 2015. Additionally, all new Federal buildings will be carbon-neutral by 2030.

Since President Bush took office, the Federal Government has spent more than $12 billion to research, develop, and promote alternative energy sources.

In December, President Bush signed into law new loan guarantee authorities to support alternative energy sources. The new authority would allow additional loan guarantees of up to $38.5 billion, of which $18.5 billion in loan guarantees will support construction of new plants and enable nuclear plant owners to reduce their interest costs. $10 billion of loan guarantees will go towards renewable and/or energy efficient systems and manufacturing, and distributed energy generation, transmission, and distribution. This loan guarantee authority also includes: $6 million for coal-based power generation and industrial gasification activities at retrofitted and new facilities that incorporate carbon capture and sequestration or other beneficial uses of carbon; $2 million for advanced coal gasification; and $2 million for advanced nuclear facilities for the ';front-end'; of the nuclear fuel cycle.

How much more of this would you like to see? I doubt any president has done this much. You guys really need to get off the I hate bush Bus and get the facts. You don't cure an alcoholic by telling him where more bars are, and drilling for more oil won't get us off our
Actually, unless America wants to nationalize the oil companies, its up to the oil companies to explore new energy options. Bush mentioned 'switch grass' a couple of times, I think thats a great alternative. But it really up to the oil companies to explore new options, and Congress can encourage it with passing incentives. But a president can only make recommendations, it does take the actions of Congress to try to push things trough.
There are two things we need to do. First we need to drill for oil on our own land, and in our own oceans. We have enough of our own oil to sustain us for about half a century if not more. Second, while we get our own oil, we need to find other means of energy using our technology. Drilling for oil now at least BUYS US TIME to find other resources. So short term solution is drill for more oil, thereby stopping our enemies from having control of us, and long term-finding other energy sources.
If we do things your way, how will you get to work. I personally live 60 miles from my job in the nearest town to it.

We need to drill domestically until we come up with a replacement. BTW what have Democrats done to invent that replacement?
It's all about BTUs, and money. I will agree that R%26amp;D into alternative energies have been way to slow. There is no leadership in Washington on alternative energies, again follow the money.
Wow. That's incredibly simplistic. Will you be saying that when gas is $12 a gallon? We need oil pal. It's a necessity.

I bet you're not for nuclear power either.
and just what is this ';other source'; can we use it today thats the problem with you libs no nuke power no coal power no oil no hydro and you have nothing to replace it with.
Right, and you don't save him any money by not distilling grain, and only importing liquer from overseas either.
Don't tease, where're the bars? Oh, if we use up the oil, we won't have to fight anymore. Won't that be wonderful?
BECAUSE BUSH IS PROFITING FROM THE OIL CRISIS YOU IDIOT! HE HAS OIL FARMS IN TEXAS YOU DOPE! God dam get a life!
Cost is one factor and we need to have the incentive to develop the technology.
Until we have that Mysterious Something Better,we're stuck with oil.

So shut up and drill, damn it.
    okay?
America needs to switch from the traditional 5 day work week to a 4 day work week. More bus routes for adults need to be added to get people to more locations. Less school buses need to be utilized and more walking for children age 11 and up (age negotiable) to get kids to school. There is no need for a school bus to waste gas making stops at every 4th or 5th house on a block, these kids can walk to the end of the block and collectively get on there, or walk to school: most (not all) schools are within a mile or so of where kids live anyway. Walking would improve their health and also cut down on child obesity which is proven to lead to diabetes in later stages of life. this would lower medical costs as well as save on gas. Like banks, laws need to be passed in which gas stations are not allowed to be open on Sundays (car dealerships can not sell cars on sundays because of state or federal laws). People need to plan their shopping and get everything done in one driving circle: eg: start at home, grocery store, clothes store, pick up kids, back to home; rather than home, grocery store, home, pick up kids, home, shopping, home, clothes store, home. (too much zig zigging and waste of gas). Lighten the lodes in your cars, be sure they are tuned up, drive speed limits, use HOV lanes where possible, car pool, enjoy vacations closer to home which you haven't done in a while, carpool for shopping, school, work, etc....) There are things the american people needs to do. we need to be in a way: vigilantes because our government, the oil companies, and other nations are not going to offer any assistance, and if assistance comes there is no turning back the prices. you will not see the price of gas lower itself below $3.50. Collectively we all have to adjust. By reducing our usage it will reduce the profits of those companies and that is the ONLY thing they understand. It is all about profit to a very SELECT few. Please pass these ideas on to everyone and anyone that will take the time to read and ask them to do the same even if they have no plans or disagree with all of these ideas.

In favor or against of drilling for oil on US territory?

and why.In favor or against of drilling for oil on US territory?
    In favor of regulated drilling.

The world is in an oil crisis. There are two methods to resolve the crisis. 1) Produce more oil; 2) find alternatives to oil. Both must be used, produce more oil while alternatives increase and are refined to a state that they are more efficient than oil.

The main argument against ANWR and offshore drilling is that it is dirty. This is a holdover from the 70s and 80s when it was quite dirty. However, the world, lead by the US, has developed clean methods for drilling that many countries, save our own, are now using. The argument is now outdated.

A second argument is the timeline. Most experts believe that from start to production takes about 5 years. This is true, however this problem will remain for more than five years, and alternatives are catching up, but we need something for the intermediate period. Furthermore, this is an argument that has been used for a decade; if we started drilling 5 years ago, we would not be asking this question.

This question tries to find what the best way to improve our QUALITY OF LIFE. We are trying to preserve the quality of life by attempting to keep practices clean, and environmentally friendly. Others are trying to preserve the quality of life by balancing oil costs and increasing stability in economies. Both are correct and we must find a balance.

We should drill responsibly with government and third party oversight. In favor or against of drilling for oil on US territory?
Against !!!!!!!!!!! It does nothing to help for ten years and big oil has thousands of acres they could be searching for oil in.

They **** up the earth enough they should not be allowed to do any more damage.
against. your hurting the earth and the animals that live there. are you talking about Alaska drilling?

    EDIT: ok jw

Do you think Mccain has it right by letting states to start drilling for oil? I do! I?

He flip-fopped because it became politically expedient to change his mind. For such an environmentalist and maverick in he's party he's really turned out to be a hypocrite and a coward. It's not going to have huge longterm effects except on the environment. Even if the US drilled all over the country we'd only have 2-3% of the needed national supply. We need to look at alternative energy sources.Do you think Mccain has it right by letting states to start drilling for oil? I do! I?
I am pleasantly surprised by McCain's sudden reversal of his policy on oil drilling. The question now is whether or not he is willing to take all the steps necessary to move us toward energy independence: Coal to oil, shale to oil, nuclear, and wind generation as well as building a hydrogen fuel infrastructure and ending corn-based ethanol subsidies during a world-wide food crisis with the current flooding that threatens to only worsen that situation.

We desperately need a comprehensive energy plan to not only increase production but to drastically reduce our demand..

McCain is pushing to allow the 50 to 200 mile limit while other countries are already exploring this region off our coasts. The drilling will begin if the US is drilling there or not.

As to the unused oilfields in North Dakota, a lease must be acquired before test drilling can begin and not every hole punched produces oil. The area in ANWR that will produce oil is only estimated to be a mere 2,000 acres of the 19.6 MILLION acre preserve. That's just over 1% of the ANWR with the potential to produce more oil than Saudi Arabia.. At issue is the 8 million acre area that is classified as ';wilderness'; where federal law states no roads are allowed to be built.

The way I see it, a few raods won't really spoil the entire region and might just allow people to actually visit the area if they chose to go above the arctic circle where there are no trees or Starbucksfor thousands of miles.

The USA has the potential to overshadow all other countries in oil production in a very short time if our government would just get out of it's own way. The coal reserves in Montana and North Dakota alone sould supply all our oil needs for a decade while we put a comprehensive long-term energy plan in effect. Clinton really blew the opportunity to make us energy independent and didn't, if elected, Obama won't do anything more than Clinton did and the current situation is only getting worse. Unless we wish to become a colony of the Saudi Arabia, the time for drastic measures is RIGHT NOW.....Do you think Mccain has it right by letting states to start drilling for oil? I do! I?
McCain kinda has his facts mixed up. As far as drilling of the coasts of states, it's not a state's rights issue. Navigable waterways fall under the juristiction of the federal government. So in essence, the Congress can pass a bill to drill off the coast of any state. McCain has to do a better job on reading up on his Constituion.
Actually, all states currently drill for oil. He wants to drill in protected areas. That is much different. Many scientist believe it will further erode the ozone layer.

It is a tough decision to decide. Do you take care of the environment for our children and their children or do you take a crass course of action?

It might be better to invest in alternative fuels. Did you catch the workshop in Lousiana that was teaching people how to make bio-diesel from left over cooking oil from resturants? Some already has the know how!
States drilling for oil? So individual states have their own seismograph and drilling crews? Not currently they do not. Once again it seems McCain has issues with reality. The oil and gas industry in the US is not nationalize. Is McCain suggesting we become like Mexico and many other countries and create a government controlled oil industry?
I think it's OK. North Dakota has massive amounts of oil fields. Big oil has hundreds of drilling rights but never uses them. Why? Look at the price of oil now. Why there isn't an investigation by congress points to collusion from so-called ';campaign financing'; bribes from big oil. Our system is corrupt from top to bottom and there's no one or nothing that will put ethics back in to our country. Just prepare for the worse is all you can do, cause money wins every time.
States don't drill for oil, nor does the US government it sells leases to oil companies who don't want the price of oil to go down.

Government does not drill, discover, refine or ship oil.

Once you understand that perhaps there will be an end to the idea that its 'our' oil to get out and put in 'our' pumps to keep the price low. Its not, many of the oil companies aren't US owned and operated and they have no interest in making less money.

Just because its under 'our' land, doesn't mean its going to go to 'our' people.

What most of you are suggesting is actually nationalizing oil.

In our culture that's a big no-no. It smacks of anti capitalism.
Drill away, but remember it can take 7 to 10 years to make an oil field productive thanks to our govt red tape.

Better to install hydrogen fill up stations, Honda went into production with their hydrogen/electric vehicle.
Yes, but at the same time keep working on improving methods for developing fuel from corn and nuclear energy.
    Yes, drill please.
Yes. I think its time we used our own resources.
