I agree with Bush that $4/gallon gasoline means we need to take some sort of Congressional action, but like any politician, Bush downplays the environmental realities and he probably knows it himself.
Democrats in Congress are concerned about the rising price of gasoline, but weigh it against the importance of the environment (sea level is rising, look at Miss. River in Iowa, hellooo???)
Without at least careful consideration of the harms to our environment before lifting the legislative ban on access to drilling, we may be incurring permanent consquences that will affect the future of our environmental localities and worldwide.
Meanwhile, there are other alternatives to be exercised to increase supply of oil that do not have to impose damage on our environment, such as holding global summits on restrictions to oil speculation and running up the price of oil futures.
Why does Bush present this issue in such a way as to only focus on the threat HE'S concerned about? Why does Bush assume drilling oil in Alaska and the Atlantic poses no threat to our environment?
As an individual you produce more pollution with the trash you throw away than drilling in Alaska would cause. Why does Bush assume drilling oil in Alaska and the Atlantic poses no threat to our environment?
Because there is very little threat to the environment. And have you actually looked at pictures of that barren wasteland in Alaska that the environmental wackos are all wound up about?
And there is already oil extraction taking place with no problems in the Gulf and off the coasts. How would more somehow cause problems that aren't happening now?
The alternatives to drilling for our own oil and building new refineries is higher prices and eventually shortages.
Bush will be gone in January. Unfortunately the democrats will still be in congress screwing up the country. Since they took over in 2006, they have ruined the housing market, screwed up the stock market, and trashed the economy with higher prices and taxes. Next they want to ruin our health care system. We need to get rid of those people.
Drilling in ANWR doesn't pose much of an environmental threat, the area in which drilling would occur is not populated whatsoever.
Drilling of the coast would occur 100-200 miles away from the shores and beaches. It wouldn't present much consquences as the rigs are very secured and rarely cause oil spills.
We can become the biggest producer of oil in the world.Countries like Kuwait who have massive oil reserves have gas at like 40 cents a gallon. How nice would that be here??
$4/gallon gas is harming me in ways that are immediate and real. The environmental harms are hypothetical and part of current oil drilling.
No oil = no food. Think about that. I don't know if you have kids but if you do picture them asking you for food and you don't have any.
We need to drill now. We'll worry about the plankton later.
It poses fewer threats than it used to.
No form of energy will ever be 100% safe. No alternative energy to oil is ready to meet the demands America has. We need oil to get us through any cross over from oil to another technology.
Why do people who oppose drilling fail to understand that such inaction keeps the USA tied to the Middle East longer?
I think he is simply lying about the safety of drilling to the environment offshore and in ANWAR , so he can maximize his profits even more. What he should be doing is establish and developing fuel saving measures and alternatives to oil, but that of course would cut into his profits.
Bush is a puppet an the people who pull his strings don't want to be in the spotlight.
Real simple people, AMERICA is suposed to be FOR THE PEOPLE, OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE.
So where are the PEOPLE?
Impeach Bush %26amp; Cheney, and keep rolling!
If we can't demand JUSTICE, AMERICA is lost!
The harm in the oiling would mostly be due to spills or accidents. The area of the refinerary wouldn't be to large to cause significant enviromental damage. I also hear the animals like sitting by the warm underground pipes.
Your environment?
So, it's perfectly OK for you to have oil drilling someplace else ?
Harm someone else's environment but not yours, is that right???
Selfish, ignorance and arrogance....
Drill,Drill,Drill,Drill. To Heck with evironmentalits and there go nowhere and do nothing policies that cost us evrything. One more time. Drill,Drill,Drill,Drill.
Bush's level of education and his overall ';intellectual capacity'; (or whatever he has instead of it) prevent him from grasping such complexity.
';Fool me once... urgh urgh...';
I AM SO SICK %26amp; TIRED OF HEARING %26amp; READING ABOUT THE ENVIROMENT %26amp; THE GREAT HOAX OF GLOBAL WARMING. THEY CAN DO IT IN NORWAY %26amp; FRANCE HAS LOTS OF NUCLEAR POWER SO LET'S STOP WITH THIS ENVIROMENT NONSENSE %26amp; GET ON WITH DRILLING.
He just wants to act instead of researching something he just does grandstanding to show he is a president of action. He never does think first.lol that is why we are in the shape we are in now.
The minor effect drilling in those locations would have on the environment is insignificant. People are more important than moose and snow bunnies.
Ok. We'll all be living in a box, but hey, the environment will be slightly cleaner. That makes sense.
Well, just an observation, but I don't think Bush is good with ';the Big Picture';
If we can become independent from Muslim countries and South American Dictators, I say, GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!
because he and the rest of his cronies are oil men they have a vested interest.
what is your solution then? what great idea do you present or do your democrats present? Being self sustaining is important, is it not? Do the refineries around the world not impact the environment? Oh wait we don't mind if they destroy their own lands and impact the environment as long as we get our view of the ocean... The fact is that the environment will take a hit. how big or small we don't know. We are tasked to do the best we can for US and future generations. If there is legitimately a few hundred year supply of oil that we can access that is ours, why continually rely on others that we cannot control? Yes it would be best to find less pollutive options. Do you think the rich oil companies want that? No, of course not, so they lobby and pay to keep the progress of ';greener'; options unavailable for a long time until the situation is dire, like now. If the majority of the country after having considered the options say Drill, then damn it, drill! This is a democracy, and the majority should dictate what happens. The problem is the minority dictates far too often by how it iwill benefit their pockets. the silent majority needs to reclaim this country and demand the power that is rightuflly theirs.
I don't believe that Bush has the assumption that drilling in Alaska poses no threat to the environment. Maybe he makes that assumption, I don't know, but I think he wouldn't care, as in his mind, the benefit outweighs the cost. I think it would have an impact, but a minimal one. Sure, the best solution would be to have vehicles that didn't require gas at all, but that day isn't going to be here very soon. I don't know what the future holds for oil, but I think that until we have an abundance of cars on the road that drive without gasoline, there is the chance that we may have to drill in Alaska and sacrifice a little corner of wilderness in order to keep the economy afloat.
Placing restrictions on oil speculation would not increase the supply. It would only impact the price for a bbl. of crude.
Shut up. No one is satisfied with anything. Dems and conservationists do not want drilling in Alaska, and Bush knows about the wildlife endangerment. The way it looks the Polar bears are losing their happy home anyway because of global warming. We are damned if we do and damned if we don't. Everyone blames Bush for the high cost of oil, and he isn't responsible for it. It is the oil companies, and this problem was going on in the 1970's for those who can remember the shortage then. Why hasn't something been done before now? What about Clinton? We had problems with shortages then too and still nothing was done. You dems want us out of the Middle East? Shut your holes and let the drilling begin.
You think we are having problems? What do you think is going to happen with all the flooding in the Midwest? All the crops are destroyed, and we are looking at our economy totally collapsing because of the our food sources are going to be greatly effected. The majority aren't aware of what is going to happen to the U.S and it's citizens in the coming year. The fuel, foods sources, and our economy are linked. One without the other we are headed towards a depression we have never known before.
why does everyone think drilling more in the US is the answer? Oil will still be high and so will gas as any oil we produce will be sold on the open market for the highest stock speculator.
Unless we can produce 10 million gallons a day!
The oil companies are jacking up the price NOT foreign powers.
I say we drill and have a $60 cap on a barrel of oil and cannot be moved up unless we run out of oil, which should not happen for the next 200 years!
Ist of all, what does the Mississippi rising have to do with the supposed rising of the sea level.
The Sea level would have to rise high enough to flood upper Minnesota to affect the Mississippi which begins in Northern Minn.Your claim is silly and very uninformed.
Bush is acting upon scientific evdence that we can effectively drill in ANWR and offshore with little or no affect on the environment.
Consider ( if you can open your mind long enough) that even Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed hundreds of offshore oil platforms, did not result in even one leak of oil.
President Bush recognizes that, contrary to what the enviroloonies whould have you beleive, destroying our economy and losing our freedom are not prices worth paying to save some carribou.
Bush concentrates on the concerns he's paid to concentrate on. Protecting this nation and its people.
Because we can drill, and do it in a safe way.
Over 1000 wells were damaged/destroyed by Katrina/Ruth.
---Not one drop leaked
If the Saudi's, Canadians, Iranians, Mexicans, Russians, Venezuelans, Algerians, Nigerians, and other can do it without hurting the environment ; I'm sure we can too.
Why can't we?
You may consider the words of Patrick Moore (Co founder of Greenpeace)
http://www.greenspirit.com/key_issues/th鈥?/a>
By the way, ANWR is the size of South Carolina. The rig would be about 1/6th the size of Dulles airport
Don't know about you, but I'm sick and tired of sending 700 Billion/year to the Saudi's cause we won't drill our own.
We have more proven oil reserves than they do! The Dems keep blocking us.. And some idiots think it's the bush's who are in bed with the Saudi's????
Bush is a jerk, that's why.
We need the oil, but what I don't see is thsat why can't they just stop selling Gas Running Vehicles, and start selling energy efficient ones. That lowers pollution AND gas prices!
I'm so mad that Bush wants to invaid wild life reserves just for oil. But how do you think he got in office??? He was an oil man, that's what he lives for.
But he got Congress to go to War, and look where that got us! I won't be suprised if he get's rights to the reserves to.
I wish Al Gore would run again. ='(
Bush has never cared about the enviroment.
u didnt even need to write all that extra stuff. there's only one answer to any question dealing with George Bush. That is: he is retarded.
Because Bush does not know his arz from his elbow when it comes to the environment...or anything else.
he knows, he's just an idiot.
cuz bush is a dipstick
Because Bush lives in a bizarre world of his own reality. It is a reality where the economy was wonderful and the country was great until January of 2007 when Democrats got a majority in Congress. Bush has lied about unemployment, recession, mortgage crisis, the war, the economy. Why wouldn't he lie about this? Follow the money. Big Oil is not happy with their monopolistic and obscene profits they are already getting. They want more. They want to wipe all the protections away and have all the land where there could possibly be oil even though they aren't drilling anywhere because they can get their oil cheaper in the Middle East. America gets its oil from Canada and South America.
Bush thinks he can lie about his record and we will believe it. It might work with Prozac Laura but the rest of us have the You Tube clips to prove it.
