Studies show that more oil leaks into the ocean from erosion than from drilling. If you just leave it there the rock will be eaten away by salt water and it will leak into the ocean without mans intervention. Most oil is from man but it is from leaky equipment on ships and leaks on land and not from the oil platforms at sea. Not to mention oil leaks from drilling platforms are cleaned and natural leaks are not. Even if you have electric cars and do not use the oil that you drill it is better for the environment that we get it out anyway.Which is better, an Electric Car or an oil-slicked ocean as the result of drilling?
The electric car will be a reality in a few years. The supposed oil bonanza, will take 7-10 years. In the last year Americans have cut their oil use back to where it was pre-1977 almost 30%. that is the same as increasing our supply. Has that cut gasoline prices? NO! they will continue to spiral upward. Oil companies have leases on 68 millon acres offshore that they haven't drilled. If their wasnt oil there, they wouldnt continue to lease them. The price is being controlled by the rich and greedy investors at the peril of the rest of this country. Paying attention would show that the price is controlled by any real, or perceived possible threat to supply. NOT ACTUAL SUPPLY. If a hurricane or natural disaster MIGHT damage offshore rigging, which MIGHT interupt supply. The rich buy up all the futures, so they will control the ACTUAL supply. If/when it really does the supply drops, the price peaks, and they made millions more. This problem with Iran has been the major cause of the 1/3 increase over the last year. The investors know that Iran has threatened, and can, cut off half the worlds oil supply that must go through their waters to export. When it appeared last week that Iran might comply with the rest of the worlds wishes, investors started selling. Now that that hope is diminishing, the price will continue on it's upward spiral. As long as the rich and greedy feel that a disaster is in the coming that will disrupt the supply they will hope it occurs. They will make millions more, and the rest of the working people will suffer which is exactly contrary to thier personna's displayed on TV. ONE BIG SCAM!
Put solar panels on all homes and business and government building. Build geothermal and solar power plants. Use wind power and wave power. Cold fusion is not dead, do a search. Search on HHO cars that run on water, (The US government has contracted an inventor that invented a device that runs engines on water, (electrolysis that released HHO from the water).
If all power sources are used then we will be using 50 to 75% less oil. But that is why it has not happened because the Oil industry wants us to burn oil.
In two to five years if the US government wanted it this could happen, with Federal and state government tax credits, grants and loans. But the US government is run by the Corporations so it will not happen. They will suck us dry and before the oil runs out, in about 20 to 40 years, we are screwed, but the Oil companies will be rich! (The governments will not let the oil run out totally and will horde the last of it for the tanks and bombers so we will be stuck with cars and no oil, or gas lines and $10 a gal gas.)
So even if we go to electric cars the oil used to make the electricity will last longer and be cleaner than burning it in the wasteful and dirty cars.
PS I drive a EV to work. It costs 20 cents a day compared to $8 a day in my car. To generate electricity in a plant is at least 80% energy efficient, compared to a gas car which is no more than 45% energy efficient. A plant can be cleaned up so it pollutes very little if any, not so with the portable power plant we call a car.
First off how do you charge the electric car?You're still burning energy and paying a high bill when you do it.
Second the oil doesn't escape into the ocean from the rigs you idiot.Look at Katrina,even though the rigs were destroyed, the oil still didn't spill.It's the oil tankers that cause the spills.We use oil tankers every day to transport oil from those god damn arabs.It would actual be safer since the trip is so much shorter.
I would prefer the oil-slicked ocean as the result of drilling... after all, how else are we going to generate oil in 7-10 years to give to China make them even stronger?...
We will be using alternative fuels for our vehicles by then, so the oil that we get from the off shore drilling won't be used by us much... but we need to find a way to keep China happy! After all, they will probably own the US by then...

Another uninformed drone, Drilling for oil only contributes to 3% of seapable while natural sepage accounts for 35%. Keep being dependent on foriegn oil. Where I live, we arent that stupid, We drill for oil, Natural gas, and have invested billions in wind power, we also are not in a recession, Youre attitude will take the rest of the country to the poor house with you.

both are needed until we get enough cars off of oil. in long run like 15-20 years from now (hopefully if congress gets out of the way) we will have at least three or four major fuel cells competing for our cars. Hydrogen, Electric, Sugar Ethanol, and obliviously oil. We will live in a multi-energy world.
Most of the oil in the ocean is natural seepage from undersea oil deposits. Deep sea drilling would lower the pressure in these oil deposits, thereby reducing the seepage, and reducing the amount of oil in the ocean.
Education is WAY better, you should try it
Drilling does NOT cause spills...Transporting oil in tankers CAN cause spills...We are already transporting (and have been for YEARS) billions of gallons of oil over our oceans EVERY SINGLE DAY.

Where do you think most electricity comes from? Mostly from coal and oil. First you gotta get better at generating energy from something else, then you can choose. Cause an electric car right now doesn't really help.
