Why won't we drill for oil in the US or build more refineries?

If there are place to drill for oil in the US then why would we not drill them, while developing alternative energies? Why won't we drill for oil in the US or build more refineries?
Hmmm...

US Daily oil output. avg 23,000 barrels per day

Saudi Arabia 5-8million barrels per day

Venezuela avg 2million barrels per day

Iraq avg 1.2million barrels per day.

N. Dakota alone (2 largest find in last 30yrs) has estimated 250-400 Billion barrels of oil, that鈥檚 Billion with a B!! Saudi Arabia has roughly 260Billion barrels left. Wonder who will run out first?

We already know that it would only cost between 12- 20 a barrel to get out of the ground. $12-$20 per barrel Domestic or $124 foreign you take your pick. US run oil production or OPEC (terrorist supporters)...

ethanol is crap.(do you know how much energy it takes to make 1 gallion of ethanol)

biodiesel is crap(little better then ethanol but will make your car smell like crap so still crap)

Hydrogen--very promising (now we need to figure out how to make it cheap but that鈥檚 10 years or more away).

So please tell me how the hell you can sit here and tell me that if we started drilling it would not matter. When we have more oil then the middle east. All our problems started 35yrs ago with Jimmy Carter and the tree huggers. President Bush wanted to drill 6yrs ago. If we were allowed too, by now we could be pumping at least half our own oil supply. 5years from now we could supply ourselves and sell the rest of the oil to world and pay off the national debt and fund clean energy like nuclear and hydrogen.

But that makes sense so we know the left will not go for it. We have to save the three lagged weasel.

Don't forget every time someone tries to drill the environmentalist file a law suit and drilling never even starts. Why won't we drill for oil in the US or build more refineries?
#1 No incentive for oil companies to boost supply.

Why would you boost supply and kill your profit margins if you had stock brokers to make happy?

#2 Drilling our own oil would do nothing to drop prices, since the real supply has nothing to do withb with the market prices anyway. Speculative trade only considers whether there is an oer supply or not, and iof there is any threat to that supply. If there is a threat to supply, then it look profitable and they'll buy buy buy, and push the price up.

#3 neither more oil refineries or more wells is going to boost the value of the dollar.

#4 big oil doesn't want to build refineries, they want the tax payer to do so, while they just sit back and collect profit.

Saying ';libs, dems, or environmentalists blocking it,'; is like saying...';I have no clue whats really going on.';
More refineries or more oil is not the answer to the problem. We have a very weak dollar which is is making oil more affordable abroad. Plus speculators are driving up the price much more than current demand. In fact demand has actually gone down in the US and in Europe. Strengthen the US dollar, continue to encourage investments in alternative energy sources, retool our vehicles through tax incentives in Detroit, and we will see incredible results. Simple answer is, if speculators see the affects of these changes, in time, oil would no longer be the hot commodity it is today.
';Refineries not running at capacity'; What a joke. In California, we have four ancient ancient refineries, built before 1950. We need at least six. But every single time one shuts down for repairs it is some conspiracy to raise the price of gasoline.

And more jokes, a few years ago the green nuts forced the refineries to add something called MTBE, forcing the ancient refineries to retool, which added more than 5 cents per gallon. Then two years later the green nuts realized MTBE was poisoning our water, so retool time again, another 5 cents.

Now, the recent joke. What is it costing us for these same refineries to retool again to use ethanol from corn? (not counting the starving third world people who's food costs have increased four times.)
we already are! come to west texas. you can't throw a rock here without hitting a pump jack. lol. but our drilling capabilities are nothing compared to what they are in the middle east. i have a friend whose husband works for apache (it's an oil company). he works overseas for 6 week stretches in egypt. a great producing well here is mediocre at best by their standards in the middle east. we need to bring those production capabilities here, to the u.s. that means spending more money and advancing our own oil refineries. we have the oil, but not the production and refining capabilities. we are helping them(the middle east) up their production. that's right, they pay us to help them up their production. they are willing to pay for our expertise! so much so that it is more lucrative to help them than to stay at home. it's time to spend that money here at home. and yes, there are other areas right here at home that can be tapped into. the ';tree huggers'; are holding those ventures up in that it has become more important to protect the potential habitat of a snail, or a frog, or a bat, etc. we are going to have to decide at some point to forgo that frog's habitat and go ahead and drill.
Members of Congress get votes, and large donations, from environmental pressure groups who oppose *ANY* development of petroleum resources, no matter how regulated. As long as Congress gets more from them than it loses from the rest of us, it will do as they demand.
We do and have many oil pumps pumping but it is not enough. We do need to drill but even then it would be at least 10 years before we would benefit from them.We are also pumping off shore and getting oil from the pipeline in Alaska.
Big oil can drill and refine all they want. Nobody is stopping them. They just have to meet standards. When was the last time a Dem administration had a secret meeting with Big Oil? If you don't see the connection you are blind along with already stupid.
Exactly. There was a poster on here earlier detailing a scenario of us drilling, no longer being dependent on *that* region, and making a profit to reduce our debt. He left out what you mention -- 'while developing alternative energies.
The lib-tards in congress will never let us drill for oil they want gas to be high. They do not want you to drive your car. They want to save the earth. They want to destroy our industrial capitalist economy and send us back to stone age.
cost money to build refineries, and big oil won't spend it, knowing Oil is growing more scarce, why is Exxon buying back it own stocks? Peak oil is reality.
Environmentalists. They're a powerful lobby. The oil companies would fight them more enthusiastically if they didn't benefit from the high barriers to competition that environmental regulation errects.
The Democratic Party depends on the huge donations of the ecology lobby (and a couple of others) many like Soros who are internationalists bent on seeing the US fall from power to exist.
liberals are against it
cause of the dems blocking it,,,, alaska is just waiting to be poked...
I was. But my Black and Decker broke.
Libs don't want it..they just want to ***** about high price of gas...force you to ride bikes, etc. There is plenty of oil off our coasts...vote Republican!!!!
because our govt. (both parties) don't care about us
we dont need to drill for more oil we have enough the gas companies no that they can charge these prices because we are going to buy gas if it is 67 cents a gallon or 10 dollars a gallon. And why would we drill for more oil president bush owns oil rigs in Texas so if oil went down he would make less money and of course it is about him making money not the people of America.
US oil reserves only have around 20 more years before they run out including the ones that haven't been tapped. Is being the world's second largest consumer enough? Stop blaming China/India for causing all the polution before you guys switch to alternative energy vehicles.
we dont need refineries, that is a republican lie, the ones we have are only at 80% capacity, and the govt own report speculates that drilling in Anwar would have long term results of lowering gas 1 cent a gallon...in 20 years

Nuclear power is the answer
We don't need to. All the economists I've heard being interviewed say that supply is not the problem. Refineries are not even running at capacity.
