So why does NOT drilling for Oil help the USA.?

Bush gave a speech today about opening up offshore drilling and oil dropped 9 dollars by the end of his speech. (it went back up 3 after democrats responded with opposition.

Why then do the democrat leaders still say that Drilling offshore will not help the USA. Do they not understand basic economic principles of SUPPLY and DEMAND.So why does NOT drilling for Oil help the USA.?
Here's a follow up question(s). If drilling for oil is fruitless, why is Russia drilling? Why is it okay for China and Cuba to drill 50 miles from the coast of Florida but the Dem's in Congress block US drilling? Who do you think will protect the environment better through advanced technology? Russia, China, Cuba or the US? We can drill and drill safely while protecting the environment. Just ask the thriving herds of caribou in Alaska....

edit - re the oil leases - that's why you explore before you drill. You don't always find oil on the land being leased. No oil, no drilling. DuhSo why does NOT drilling for Oil help the USA.?
Their argument is that drilling will not help reduce prices now. And they are correct. They will reduce prices someday in the future.

Well, someday is going to come eventually. If Bill Clinton had not vetoed drilling in ANWR, we'd have that oil pumping today!

The Democrat's policy is the one that is short sighted. Not only are they doing nothing to help today, but they are aggravating the situation for the future.
The high price of gas has nothing to do with supply/demand. Did you not notice that OPEC increase supply a couple of weeks ago and the price INCREASED $10/barrel the next day? Are you unaware that we have increased drilling in the U.S. by 66% since 2000 and the price is still going up? If there was a supply problem, we would have gas lines, but we don't, do we?

The main causes are that we have lost HALF the trading value of the U.S. dollar since Bush was signed into office and the outrageous exploits of the speculation market, which economists say make up of 25-45% of the current cost of gas.

And, in fact, if you want to talk about economists, they said it would take at least 5years for this legislation to affect the price of gas and they estimated it would, at most, save us 25cents a gallon at the pump. That's a joke. And think about how much in investments and in potential hazards for this? The U.S. has 2% of the oil reserves in the world, 86% of it is available NOW, no new bids needed.

But if you don't want to get to the nitty gritty of the high price of gas now, let me say this -- just under 70% of the existing land available to drill on is being SAT ON by big oil, why give them more when they won't utilitize what they have? It's dumb. And there's not ONE econimist that backs this exploit of ignorance on the issue.
Some people are just to thick to comprehend this, but here it goes again.

The oil companies have thousands of acres of oil leases that they don't drill. They even have off shore leases that they don't drill. The oil prices dropped because there are thousands of computer generated sell orders that are set to go into effect in a few days, so there is profit taking going on. If you did a little research on your own, you'd know that.
In their little brains it will help because they can then blame Republicans for ';shortages'; and get more votes, more democratic votes means a better America...in the minds of the DNC.

This is the DNC underestimating the intelligence of Americans...yet again. While they are right most of the time about the stupidity of their constituents, they fail miserably when they try to do something like this...kind of like when they tried to initiate a draft in the last election and then said ';Bush did it'; and we were supposed to believe them.
Good Lord, Julian (above) is the most stupid person I've heard today. EVERY price has to do with supply and demand.

Liberals will do or say anything to get Obama into the White House. They also have a very ';NIMBY'; attitude about things (not in my back yard). In their minds, talking about solar and wind energy is the same thing as actually having it.

It's actually pretty disgusting, how stupid our elected officials really are.
The far-left Democrats are OWNED by the far-left environmentalists. They stopped making any sense at all long ago. They know who butters their bread, and they will simply refuse to change their position on this important issue. I hope they stick to their guns, because the result will be a serious backlash from the American voters next time around.
Well, because, ummmm, we aren't interupting the migratory path of the caribou. Yeah, that's it! Why should we drill for oil, when we may be delaying some poor oversized deer from getting some booty?
Its not supply and demand, it is speculation which is what you saw in the price fluctuation today.

Drilling is only okay if it is not the only thing we do. Relying on drilling again lands us right back here in a few more years
Well, we want a free market. Less supply means higher prices and isn't a free market good for the US? Doesn't Reaganomics mean that when a company makes profit and drive prices up that it benefits us in the end?
Many analysts say that the present situation is divorced from actual supply and demand, the so-called fundamentals.
Ask an oil company: they are the ones who decide when to drill for oil.
They worry about the turtles and whales, screw the people.
i will never understand liberal mentality

Drill everywhere possible
Dems think giving a lot of our wealth to Muslim countries is a good thing. It helps make us all equal.
