How is drilling for oil a bad thing?

http://www.warriorsfortruth.com/alaska-o鈥?/a>

Millions of new jobs

Billion of dollars staying in our economy...or do Liberals like keeping leaders in the Middle East rich?

Everyone wants alternative energy, but until then, lets make America independant on foreign sources.

How is drilling for oil a bad thing?
It's not, it's just that the oil companies don't want to drill in areas where they've already recieved government permission. Go figure.

That is true but you do know that eventually they'll not only need to but want to drill in those areas. How is drilling for oil a bad thing?
The issue with offshore drilling is that the more oil we drill, the more we'll use and the same issue that we're facing today will arise again. Adding more oil on the market will just further encourage oil use and the dependency for Arab oil while discovering alternative fuels would begin to lessen the need for foreign oil. If our motive is to hand less money to Middle Eastern nations, the key is developing alternative fuels, NOT drilling for more oil.
Well, I think it depends on where this drilling takes place. When it comes to Alaska, it's going to hurt the wildlife there, which is a big resource there. Many republicans like Palin believe they should drill there, but don't realize that if they do this it might mean a decrease in the population of animals they hunt, so it's kind of a tradeoff. I admit drilling in Alaska would probably help the economy a lot, but when it comes to drilling off the coast of California (I'm not sure if you meant this as well, but I'll just throw it out there since it has to do with oil) it'll actually hurt the Californian economy because most of the profit we make is off of tourism, and I doubt tourists are going to want to come to our beaches with huge oil plants in the background.
I completely agree with you. Its beyond me why people don't want us to drill. Drilling domestically keeps the money in our economy, brings in jobs, provides cheeper gasoline and makes it easier for us to move to alternative energy sources. We all understand that oil does damage the environment, and we should get away from it. But to completely abolish drilling and just buying it from foreigners doesn't make the pollution any better. We need to be mostly energy independent before we can spend billions on alternative sources. Going straight to alternate sources right now would be to hard on the economy, and it would break us as a country. Thats what I think.
The oil won't make it to market for 10-30 years.

Oil companies have milllions of acres they can drill on now and dont use to keep their profits high.

That oil will be sold on the world market at market prices, not to specifically to Americans at lower prices, right?

What's going on now isn't hurting the oil companies.

We could be oil independent by just changing the MPG of our cars to european standards

We could create those jobs you are referring to by creating alternative energy solutions
Thousands of new jobs. A few percent of our annual oil consumption. By the time the leases are let, the platforms are deployed, the wells are drilled, and the oil is extracted, processed, and distributed, we will have increased our annual oil consumption by more than the peak annual production from the off-shore oil network.

Increased energy efficiency will save more oil than we can produce in all offshore oil drilling. T. Boone Pickens has begun the push for wind power. He expects to make a lot of money, while helping America toward energy indpendence. Sounds like a win, win to me.

Risks to marine sport and commerical fisheries and recreational beaches, with the potential loss of tens of thousands of jobs due to a loss of tourism and tens of millions of dollars in tuorist dollars to the small businesses Republicans profess to love but don't.

No incentive for oil companies to explore and deplete existing on-shore leases. The State of Alaska is in the process of pulling EXXON's rights to explore in 44 parcels in the Thomson Point range, because EXXON hasn't drilled one new oil well since the early 1980s. So the Dems argument that the oil companies have not explored and extracted the oil reserves they own in existing on-land leases is valid.

Alternative energy production will create hundreds of thousands of jobs, reduce our carbon footprint, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Conservation will get us to oil independence faster than any other strategy.

Nancy Peosi isn't a close friend of Prince Faisal of the House of Saud. George Bush II is. So who has the conflict of interest?

Why don't you ask the Bush White House about making a lot of money for the middle easterners! Drilling for oil you don't have will change nothing and will be far worse as a potential hazard to the environment that could destroy other industries. The cause of which is the opposite of what you currently believe with the loss of thousands of jobs and millions spent.

You really think that the U.S. has enough oil to sustain it's own needs? Wow, dude you really are in the dark. Please seek credible, reliable non-biased news sources and stop watching Fox News for all of your Worldly knowledge.

I let you in on another little know fact, Canada has enough oil to supply itself and the U.S. for the next 400 years and guess what... the price of a barrel of oil is the same there as the entire World market.
I'm not a supporter of any oil, whether its American or not. But seriously....we've been using coal and oil for the longest time. Why can't society evolve enough to find something better? why are we stagnating back to these non-renewable sources when we have the technology to make floating wind turbines?

But anyways, drilling for oil just furthers our dependency on oil itself, from whatever source. Drilling for oil offshore will have huge pre-production costs since setting up an ocean drilling system is very labor and time intensive, plus you run into the problem of transportation, and the resources needed to transport that oil back to the mainland. With ANWR drilling, the pipeline is already in place and honestly prudhoe bay is basically a wasteland (personal experience can vouch for that). The benefit to ANWR is that there is little cost to set-up, and the pipeline is a fairly basic form of transporting it back, but the amount of oil stored under there is minimal. About 6 months worth at our current rate of expenditure.

Offshore drilling won't be productive for about 10 years. Thats AT LEAST 10 more years of our oil stagnation.

You say everyone wants alternative energy, and I honestly don't see what the big deal is with getting it. We DO have the technology, we are just completely failing to use it.

But I'm going to counter your straw-man argument with one of my own.

Your straw-man: liberals like keeping leaders in the middle east rich

My counter straw-man: conservatives are stagnating in the past, insisting on using outdated resources and ignoring technology.

Happy?
Ask Al Gore Jr...his family wealth comes from and continues to come from Occidental Petroleum!

He didn't try to add Green Living to his Estate until he was found out...then after the upgrades he increased Energy usage by 10%!

It's funny, his stand used to be 'Indigenouse Rights' before he tried a run for the Whitehouse...then conveniently it changed to 'Native American Rights'!
Because an oil slick on Florida beaches would cost more then we would make off the oil. As for Alaska? who gives a crap screw those polar bears and screw the fragile artic environment so what if there's no fish? and ignore the fact the decisions were made by republicans
it's not.

THE PENGUINS! DEAR GOD WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE PENGUINS?!?!

what? there aren't any penguins and the wildlife likes to hang around the rigs and pipes because of the warmth and lack of bugs?

i don't care. BUSH SUX. the penguins. the penguins.
it is not bad its really good you will see, i can drill you and put you out all the oil u have, u will love it...
You don't understand. The end game is to destroy this country so leftists can reshape it in their image, and make it subordinate to the Father Land.
Cause, up until recently, it was a democrat political issue. Now Fannie and Freddie are more important!!!
It's only bad when it's the good thing to do.
that's what she said
