Tax oil companies or drill for more oil?

I think we should increase oil company taxes. Drilling will not put any dent in oil prices in the forseeable future. Within 10years from now, most americans might demand less gas. Who needs additional drilling when people don't want as much gas? I think drilling for more oil is a method for americans to continue their 20million per barrel a day habit. If oil prices continue to increase then this habit will stop. Ultimately, taxing oil companies does not hurt the environment.Tax oil companies or drill for more oil?
Whoa, whoa, whoa... how would increasing oil company taxes help us out? If the government increases their taxes then they will go and increase the price we pay at the pump.

People don't want as much gas? I don't know about you but I actually like driving, I like taking vacations, I like being able to get to work every day. More gas! MORE GAS!Tax oil companies or drill for more oil?
BUSINESSES DO NOT PAY TAXES! THEY PASS THE COST ONTO CONSUMERS. I know that it makes everyone happy to stick it to the evil oil companies and pass a windfall tax bill, but that will just raise the price of gas again. Drilling will not bring back the good old days of $1 a gallon gas, but it will get it lower that $4 or $5 a gallon. At least this way the money will help create more jobs here in America instead or making dictators and terrorist supporting regimes rich. Technologies will continue being developed to conserve fuel, like hybrids and variable cylinder engines,or move us away from gas completely, like hydrogen fuel cell technology. The demand for theses technologies will not go away with global demands for oil is increasing. Just because gas goes back to $3 a gallon people can still see the value and demand for any technologies that can reduce or replace oil as a fuel . We also need to move to nuclear power plants instead of coal and natural gas plants. If France can get 80% if it's power from nuclear why can't we?
Ok so I understand that taxing oil companies isn't necessarily the right way to go. Government taxes them, they tax us, right? But, The Department of Energy concluded in a study that drilling would only reduce the price of crude oil per barrel by about 50 cents 17 YEARS FROM NOW; granted we started drilling in the near future. And it's also estimated that the amount of oil that will be attained from drilling would only alleviate the price of crude oil for an estimated 10 years. So where do we go from here? Taxing isn't going to help. Drilling is not going to help short term nor will it really help long term. Our mind-set needs to change, energy independence starts with each and everyone in the United States. It won't happen over night but we seriously need to consider consuming less to protect the environment and our pockets.

Below is the link to the report conducted by the DOE.
Corporations don't pay taxes. All corporate taxes are taxes on the people who use their products. Raise ';corporate'; taxes and prices go up on the guy at the pump. We needed to start drilling years ago. We also need to get our smart scientists to develop grease and oil producing plants to save the biodiesel industry. Corn and Soybean oil is now in short supply and too expensive to complete with oil based diesel.
well robert, this is another flip flop on obama.

remember when hillary wanted the gas tax holiday and said she would impose a ';windfall tax'; on the oil companies so they are paying for it.

Well, remember obama went nuts about this? he stood up in speeches and rallies and said over and over that if we put a windfall tax on the oil companies they would just raise the price of gas to make up that tax. Remember that?

search yahoo answers for that discussion in here as you all obama supporters were going crazy sayin it that obama said the oil companies would just raise the gas prices.

well guess what. NOW obama is FOR a windfall tax! what will happen when you apply that tax to the oil companies? they will raise the price of gas to cover that cost! Thats from his own mouth a couple months ago.

How you obama supporters soon forget this!!!!!!!!

and also, dont you remember obamas speeches the last couple months saying in rallies how he wants to drill for oil here in america!!!!!!!!

lol, the short term memory that obama people seem to have makes me laugh.
You don't think we are taxing them enough now? The government is now receiving over 300% more out of a gallon of oil than the oil company makes. Who are the crooks here. It's not the oil companies.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A WINDFALL PROFIT!! That is a term idiot politicians made up to make their idiot constituents fall for the increase of taxes.
hiding your head in the sand and your azz in the air will not solve anything at all. Taxing oil Co's is insane you tax 90% they raise price 91% dont you remember the Carter years or were you still crapping your diapers. If you were just ask your dad.
Drill, cause the reason we have toruble now is that 10 years ago, people like you made this same stupid argument. You are the reason we pay 4 bucks a gallon. If Europe can drill of the coast, and liberals want us to be more like Europe, what the hell is the problem.

OH YEAH AND WE NEED MORE NUKE PLANTS.
you tax oil companies and all they would do is pass it to the consumer.

Economics my friend, I don't want to pay more.

When their prices go up, your price will go up. It's called offset.
Tax Politicians and drill for more Oil

“We don't have a trillion-dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough; we have a trillion-dollar debt because we spend too much” Ronald Reagan
I agree. Considering that the environment is one of the most important long term issues, taxing oil companies would help to reduce American consumption, and would provide additional incentives for oil companies to invest in alternative fuel sources which would bring down energy costs in the long run. Either way, it will be a while before energy prices come down, but at least by taxing the oil companies it will help move us towards alternative fuels while protecting the environment.
When it's said and done...and we've poisoned the planet...who'll care about the price of oil ? We won't be around!!! In my opinion the only solution is a collective one...not the market forces of supply and demand, because global warming is real... and if we don't treat it as such...then the entire planet is in peril.

Rick O: I remember Carter...He inherited an economy dependent on Mideast oil...thanks to Nixon, who decided to exchange weapons for oil with Iran. Nothing has changed. When Carter tried to rid our habit...Reagan was elected and we went back to business as usual.
Tax Oil Companies. Go with Obama and leave the offshore oil for our grand kids.
Naive, drilling more wont change the prices or the need to keep the planet clean
I say we should do both.
